MARATHON – The Auburndale, Spencer and Marshfield Columbus Catholic track teams will keep busy this week as the three local teams at the WIAA Division 3 Track & Field Regional on Monday at Marathon High School advanced numerous athletes and relay teams to the sectional meet.
The top four finishers in each event move on to the Division 3 sectional on Thursday at Rosholt, with the top four in each event there qualify for the 2016 WIAA State Track & Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse on June 3-4.
Auburndale senior Sylviann Momont earned top-four finishes in four events to lead the way for the local competitors.
Momont was second in the long jump (16 feet, 5½ inches), 100-meter hurdles (16.59 seconds), and triple jump (33-8½), and took third in the 300 hurdles (51.06).
The Auburndale girls also had six other individuals and one relay team move on to sectionals. Rachel Gronemeyer won the 400 in 1:02.54 and Kali Karl was first in the 800 in 2:28.92 to lead the way.
Others qualifying for sectionals for the Auburndale girls were the 1,600 relay team of Gronemeyer, Katie Leick, Isabella Jewell and Karl (4:18.29), Cassie Mitchell (third 100 hurdles, 17.66), Jewell (third 400, 1:04.49), Sam Jensen (fourth discus, 99-7), and Leick (fourth 1,600, 6:07.17).
Carver Empey was second in the 400 (53.43) and Nick Steele finished second in the long jump (19-7½) to provide the Auburndale boys with two sectional qualifiers.
Columbus Catholic senior Alexandra Hutchison, the defending Division 3 girls state champion in the 100 and 200 meters, took a step closer to being able to defend those titles by winning each event at the regional. Hutchison won the 100 in 12.60 and the 200 in 25.64.
Columbus Catholic also had one individual – Becca Wirthlin in the 800 – and the 3,200 relay team move on to sectionals with fourth-place finishes.
The Columbus boys will have three relay teams and four individuals at the sectional. The top finish for the Dons came from the 800 relay team of Elijah Welsh, Leo Pittsley, David Nielsen and Farid Torbey, which took second in 1:35.76. Pittsley (200), Torbey (high jump), Welsh (discus) and Benny Frericks (3,200) all placed fourth to move on.
Spencer had four regional champions and a total of five individuals and two relay teams qualifying for sectionals in eight events.
Sabrina Vircks won the girls high jump with a leap of 5-2, the Rockets’ 400 relay team of Nadia King, Lauren Faber, Kaily Northup and McKenna Brecht won in 52.61, Johanna Ellefson won the girls pole vault (10-3) and Noah Zastrow took first in the boys pole vault (14-0).
Zastrow was also second in the 300 hurdles (42.58), as did Max Johnson in the shot put (49-5¼), and the 1,600 relay team of Northup, Liz Endreas, Vircks and King (4:17.45).
