Loyal/Granton eliminates Auburndale softball in WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal

AUBURNDALE – A promising season came to an abrupt end for the Auburndale softball team as it dropped a 7-2 decision to Loyal/Granton in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal Tuesday at Auburndale High School.

Auburndale came into the game winners of nine of its last 14 games. After starting the season 0-5, the Apaches finish the year with a 9-10-1 record.

Loyal/Granton (7-9) will play at Spencer (16-5) in a D-3 regional semifinal at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The Greyhounds scored twice in the third and four times in the fourth to open up a 6-0 lead. Auburndale had 11 hits, but could manage only two runs in the loss.

Mickey Terry was 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, and Sydney Schmutzer went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Auburndale.
