Columbus advances two singles players to sectionals

VIROQUA – Marshfield Columbus Catholic had a pair of singles players advance to the sectional tournament Monday at the WIAA Division 2 boys tennis subsectional.

The Dons’ Chris Lamermayer (8-9) finished second at No. 1 singles, losing to Stevens Point Pacelli’s Mac Debot in the finals.

At No. 3 singles, Columbus’ Lucas Michalik (11-7) was second to Matt Shlesinger of La Crosse Aquinas.

The top four finishers in No. 1 singles and doubles, and the top two in other flights advance to the sectional meet Wednesday at the Boson Courts at Marshfield High School.

The top four finishers in No. 1 singles and doubles and the winner of the No. 2 singles and doubles automatically qualify for the WIAA State Individual Tennis Tournament in Madison on June 3-5. Michalik, playing at No. 3 singles, is ineligible for the state tournament.

Aquinas won six of the seven flights and leads the team points standings with 24. Pacelli is second with 20. Columbus tied for fourth with six.
