Marshfield Post 54 Senior Legion splits pair with Eau Claire

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Clinic Post 54 Senior American Legion baseball blew a late lead in the first game of a doubleheader against Eau Claire on Wednesday, but rallied to win Game 2 in the non-league twinbill at Jack Hackman Field.

Eau Claire, ranked second in the latest Class AAA state poll, scored seven times in the top of the seventh inning to beat fifth-ranked Marshfield 11-5 in the opener before the Blue Devils cruised to an 11-1 win in the second game.

Jason Kurth took a 5-4 lead into the seventh before Eau Claire put together the big inning to win it. The first two runners in the inning reached, chasing Kurth from the game, and the floodgates opened from there.

Cole Hoffman took the mound and gave up six hits and five runs, three of which were earned.

Jack Donahue had three hits and an RBI, Trevor Schwecke hit a home run and drove in a pair, and Nate McDonald and Jared Klein also had two hits apiece for the Blue Devils.

Mitch Susa tossed a five-inning, complete game in Game 2 for Marshfield, striking out five.

Marshfield had 15 hits and scored in all five of its at-bats, posting four-run innings in the second and fourth innings.

McDonald went 4-for-4 with a double and scored three times, Schwecke went 3-for-3 with a triple, Donahue had three RBIs, and Klein had a double and a single for the Blue Devils.

Marshfield (20-5) will finish its regular-season schedule Thursday night with a home, Wisconsin Valley Legion League game against Wausau beginning at 7 p.m.
