Marshfield Junior Legion baseball wins first two games at regional

STEVENS POINT – The Marshfield Clinic Post 54 Junior American Legion baseball team went 2-0 in the first day of the Junior Legion regional on Thursday, routing D.C. Everest 19-8 and slipping by Wausau 5-2.

The Blue Demons (26-11) will next play Saturday at 2 p.m. against either Wisconsin Rapids or Stevens Point as the regional continues at Bukolt Park. The winner moves on to the Wisconsin 17-under State Junior Legion Tournament next week in Plover.

With the score tied at 3-3 against Everest after 1½ innings, Marshfield scored seven runs in the second inning to take a 10-3 lead. After Everest cut it to 10-8, the Blue Demons finished off the game with two runs in the third and seven more in the fourth, winning in 4½ innings due to the 10-run rule.

Marshfield had 13 hits in the win, including two each from Branden Montalvo, Jared Johnsrud and Tyler Spaeth. Montalvo and Spaeth each drove in a pair of runs.

Austin Palecek earned the win in relief, pitching 2 1/3 innings of shutout ball with six strikeouts.

Against Wausau, Marshfield broke open a tie game with a three-run fifth inning and held on from there.

Hunter Korger threw a complete game, striking out seven and allowing just four hits and two walks in seven innings.

Palecek and Devin Toburen each had two singles, and Montalvo drove in five runs with a pair of doubles.
