OSHKOSH – Spencer/Columbus Catholic football coach Jason Gorst and four area high school players participated in the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association state all-star games on Saturday, July 16, at Titan Stadium.
The annual games, pitting graduated seniors from high schools throughout the state, are used as a fund-raising event for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.
Running back Nick Hoheisel and tight end Zach McManus of Marshfield were members of the North team in the Large School game.
Hoheisel had one carry for minus-1 yard and caught a 44-yard pass, while McManus hauled in a 12-yard pass for the North, which lost to the South team 17-7. The two Tigers’ catches accounted for about one-third of the North’s offensive output as it was held to just 152 total yards.
In the Small School game, Gorst was an assistant coach for the North team that won 28-24.
Spencer/Columbus offensive lineman Elijah Welsh and Stratford defensive back Jesse Dickman played for the North team that jumped out to a 21-6 lead and held on from there.
Amherst quarterback and University of Wisconsin recruit Garrett Groshek was 12 of 19 passing for 111 yards and a touchdown, and Cody Folkers of Fall Creek was 10 of 12 for 145 yards and two TDs for the North. Parker Gloudemans of Little Chute had three catches for 85 yards and two touchdowns.
Other Central Wisconsin players competing for the North team in the Small School game were Edgar’s Austin Borchardt and Wylie Frahm, Eric Jorgenson of Colby, and Samuel Buchberger of Marathon.
“It was an honor and a privilege to be selected to coach in the game,” Gorst said. “I really enjoyed the experience of getting to know other coaches and players from around the state. It was a great learning opportunity. I was really proud of the effort Elijah gave all week.
“I’d really like to thank all of the people who donated on our behalf for the Wisconsin Children’s Hospital. Meeting those kids and hearing their stories was one of the more impactful events in my recent life.”
