MARATHON – The Spencer volleyball team ended up 3-2 and finished third at the Early Bird Invitational at Marathon High School on Saturday.

The Rockets beat Northland Lutheran 2-0 and Phillips 2-1 before losing to Stratford 2-1 and Marathon 2-0. Spencer finished up the tournament with a 2-1 win over Rib Lake.

Marathon won the tournament title with Stratford taking second. Stratford statistics were not provided.

Liz Endreas led Spencer with 35 kills in its five matches. Jenna Schober added 31 kills and four blocks, Johanna Ellefson had 28 kills and six blocks. Sadie Mercier had 65 assists and McKenzie Bainer added 44 from the setter position, and Jenna Rogers led the defense with 90 digs.

“We were still inconsistent throughout the day,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “Too many unforced errors cost us a shot at first. There is a lot we can improve on and some things we are doing well.”

Spencer hosts Westfield in a nonconference match on Thursday. Stratford opens its Marawood Conference South Division schedule at home against Northland Lutheran on Tuesday.
