Marshfield girls golfers finish out of qualifying spots at WIAA Division 1 Sparta regional

SPARTA – The 2016 season came to an end for the two members of the Marshfield girls golf team after competition at the WIAA Division 1 regional tournament on Wednesday at River Run Golf Course.

Marshfield junior Roma Shah shot a 116 to tie for 24th place and freshman Megan Vandehey was 32nd with a 134 out of the 38 girls competing at the regional.

The top four teams and top four individuals not on those teams qualify for the sectional tournament on Monday at Wild Ridge Golf Club in Eau Claire.

Clover Valley Golf League champion Stevens Point won the team title with a score of 355, five shots ahead of Onalaska. Tomah was third (400) and Sparta fourth (425) to also qualify as a team for the sectional.

Mary McDonald of Stevens Point, and Sydney Hubbard and Erin Ericson of Onalaska tied for individual medalist honors with 81s.

Wisconsin Rapids’ Cierra Botcher was seventh with a 91, La Crosse Central/Logan’s Maggie Kendhammer was 11th with a 96, Westby/Viroqua’s Brooke Knutson was 13th with a 99, and Holmen’s Lydia Ryan took 15th with a 101 to grab the four individual qualifying spots for the sectional.

The top two teams and top three individuals not on those teams at the sectional will move on to the WIAA State Girls Golf Tournament at University Ridge Golf Club in Verona on Oct. 10-11.
