Stratford’s Zuelke, Spencer’s Kolstad win sectional track titles

MARATHON – The Stratford boys track and field team had three individuals and one relay team qualify for next week’s state meet at the WIAA Division 3 sectional Thursday at Marathon High School.

Matt Zuelke won the 1,600 meters in 4 minutes, 34.94 seconds and helped the Tigers’ 3,200 relay team finish second in 8:24.78. Zuelke joined Steve Wenzel, Tylyn Hoover and Mark Marquardt on the relay team, which will compete at the WIAA State Track and Field Championships on June 4-5 at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

The top four finishers in each event at the sectional meet qualified for the state meet.

Ben Robers was second in the pole vault (14-0) and Andre Tackes was second in the 100 (11.67) to also qualify for the Stratford boys.

The Stratford girls had one qualifier. The 800 relay team of Alyssa Fisher, Karissa Kaiser, Josie Kolbeck and Toshia Spindler was fourth in 1:51.55.

Spencer’s Tyler Kolstad won the boys high jump (6-2), Marcie Hebert was second in the girls discus (114-7) and freshman Tara Matter took third in the girls triple jump (34-1) to qualify for the state meet.

The Columbus Catholic teams had a combined 15 entries at the sectional, but only one qualified for the state meet.

The Columbus boys 400-meter relay team of Greg Wunrow, Austin Mahoney, Dodge Langreck and Beom Koh took fourth in a time 45.62 seconds to move on to state.

The Auburndale boys were shut out of state berths, but the girls team have two athletes going to state in three events.

Danica Harrison took third in the 3,200 (12:13.60) and the 1,600 (5:34.85), and Kelly Tomfohrde was second in the pole vault (10-6) to qualify for next week’s state meet in La Crosse.
