MARATHON – The Auburndale football team’s season came to an end Friday night with a 26-6 loss to Marathon in a WIAA Division 6 Level 1 playoff game at Marathon High School.
The Apaches kept it close early, trailing just 14-6 at halftime, but they couldn’t muster another score.
Marathon (9-1) moves on to a Level 2 matchup at Abbotsford (10-0) next Friday.
Donavan Free tossed touchdown passes of 20 and 13 yards to Riley Rhyner, and ran in a score from 19 yards for Marathon.
Auburndale’s lone score came on a 9-yard pass from Ryan Isaacson to Aaron Willfahrt with 4:31 to go in the half that cut Marathon’s lead to 14-6 at the time.
Mitchell Putnam finished with 143 yards rushing for the Raiders, 50 of that coming on a touchdown run with just more than 3 minutes to go in the first half, and Marathon held the Apaches scoreless in the second half.
Auburndale statistics were not reported.
Auburndale ends its season with a 4-6 record.
