College roundup: Updates on Michaelis, Fleischmann, Peplinski

A number of former local high school athletes have moved on to the next level and are playing sports collegiately across the country.

Periodically, MarshfieldAreaSports.com will publish a College Sports Roundup updating readers of some of those local athletes’ exploits at the collegiate level.

Caitlin Michaelis

Michaelis starting at Crookston
Caitlin Michaelis, a 2015 graduate of Marshfield High School, has started eight of nine games for the University of Minnesota-Crookston women’s basketball team this season as a sophomore guard.

Michaelis is averaging 21 minutes, 4.7 points, 2.6 rebounds and one assist per game for Crookston, which is just 1-8 overall and 1-4 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference prior to a conference game at Winona State on Friday.

Crookston lost its first eight games before beating Bemidji State 80-68 on Dec. 15. Michaelis had two points, two rebounds and one assist in win.

Jared Fleischmann

Jared Fleischmann, a 2014 graduate of Columbus Catholic High School, is a junior on the Viterbo University men’s basketball team.

Fleischmann has started all 15 games this season for the V-Hawks, averaging 8.8 points, 3.6 assists, 2.6 rebounds and one steal per game. He has also made 12 3-pointers.

Viterbo is 7-8 overall and 2-3 in the North Star Athletic Association, a conference of NAIA schools, heading into a game at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday.

Fleischmann started all 30 games last year for Viterbo, averaging a team-high 31 minutes per game. He also averaged 8.3 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest.

Ashley Peplinski

Ashley Peplinski, a 2016 graduate of Auburndale High School, is a freshman on the University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team.

Peplinski has played in three games this season for the Yellow Jackets, making both of her field goal attempts, and scoring five total points and grabbing four rebounds.

Superior was 8-3 and 5-0 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference prior to Thursday’s game at home against Alverno. The Yellow Jackets had won seven straight games.

Peplinski also played on the UW-Superior volleyball team in the fall. She played in 33 sets in eight matches, totaling 26 kills and 13 digs as the Yellow Jackets finished 8-22
