LA CROSSE – Kamren Bornbach won the 220-pound title and 11 Stratford wrestlers earned top-12 finishes as the Tigers cruised to its fourth-straight Division 3 team title at the 2016 Bi-State Wrestling Classic on Friday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Bornbach (18-1) earned a pin in the semifinals and a 10-5 win in the championship to grab the Tigers’ lone individual championship in the two-day, 60-team tournament.

Stratford had three others reach the finals in their respective weight classes, but all finished second.

Manny Drexler (17-2) lost in the 106-pound title match to Reid Ballanty of Stillwater (Minn.) 5-1; Max Schwabe (18-1) dropped his first decision of the season, losing to Jon Bailey of Sparta 4-3 in the 113-pound championship; and Jake Drexler (17-2) was pinned by Sam Stuhl (20-0) of Ellsworth in 53 seconds in the 132-pound final.

A.J. Schoenfuss (17-3) lost his semifinal match at 120 and finished third; David Marquardt (16-2) dropped his semifinal match and finished fifth at 170; and Tyson Kauffmann (6-4) also lost in the semifinals at 285 and ended up taking sixth after a medical forfeit.

Also earning top-12 spots for Straford were Derek Marten (fifth at 126), Kade Ehrike (seventh at 160), Aiden Hoffman (seventh at 195), and Dilan Dehlinger (12th at 138).

Stratford piled up 367.5 points to take first place in Division 3 by nearly 200 points over Athens, which finished second with 169.

Marshfield ended up fourth in Division 1 with 188 points, just 1½ points behind third-place Eastview (Minn.). Sparta won the team title with 246 points.

Seven Marshfield wrestlers ended up in the top 11, with Bentley Ostermann (17-4) having the highest finish for the Tigers taking sixth at 160 pounds.

Nolan Hertel (16-4) was seventh at 145, Sam Mitchell (15-7Z) took ninth at 170, Conner Peterson (195) and Caden Pearce (132) each finished 10th, and Caden Dennee (113) and Aelx Brost (182) took 11th for Marshfield.

“I thought overall we had a good tournament,” Marshfield coach Jackson Hein said. “We ran into some great competition around the state of Wisconsin and Minnesota.Last year we came away from this tournament with only one wrestler to place in the top 12 (Nolan Hertel) comparing to this year’s seven. This is a big improvement from a year ago and clearly shows that our wrestlers and program are headed in the right direction.”

Hunter Luepke was one of three Spencer/Columbus Catholic wrestlers to finish in the top 11 as he took second at 195 pounds. Luepke suffered his first loss of the season in the championship match to Mike Delich of Eastview 6-1, and drops to 15-1 for the year.

Logan Zschernitz fought his way back through the consolation bracket to take fourth at 285 and is now 16-2 this season for the Rockets. Ashton Ackman finished 11th at 106. SC was eighth in Division 2 with 133.5 points. Ellsworth won the D-2 team title.

Auburndale also competed in the event, but did not have any wrestlers finish in the top 12. The Apaches finished 13th in the Division 3 team standings.
