MADISON – Marshfield sophomores Nolan Hertel and Sam Mitchell were eliminated from the 2017 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament after losing Division 1 consolation bracket matches Friday morning at the Kohl Center.

Hertel (32-11) lost 3-1 to Waterford senior Austin Thomas (22-6) at 145 pounds, while Mitchell (25-16) was pinned by Kaukauna sophomore Bryson Alsteen (42-8) at 170 pounds.

For Hertel, it marks the second straight season he qualified for the state meet, while Mitchell was making his debut at the tournament.

Hertel used an escape midway through the third period to close to within 3-1 and was close to earning a takedown in the final seconds but Thomas was able to hold him off.

Alsteen used a takedown and a nearfall early in the first period to take a quick 4-0 lead, and had takedowns in the second and third periods to go up 8-0 before pinning Mitchell with 56 seconds to go.
