The Stratford wrestling team has been voted as the WDLB-WOSQ Radio & MarshfieldAreaSports.com March High School Athlete of the Month.
The High School Athlete of the Month Award is sponsored by Marshfield Clinic, Cost Cutters Family Hair Care and Burt Trophy & Awards.
Varsity athletes from the following high schools are eligible to be nominated for the award: Abbotsford, Athens, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marathon, Marshfield, Neillsville, Owen-Withee, Pittsville, Spencer, Stratford and Thorp.
Stratford wrestling garned 165 of the 360 votes cast.
Other nominees for the March award were the Loyal girls basketball team, winners of the WIAA Division 5 state title, and the Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys basketball team that reached the WIAA Division 5 state tournament semifinals.
Stratford won its first-ever state title by rolling past Random Lake 52-13 and Fennimore 49-13 at the WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament on March 4 at the UW Fieldhouse in Madison. The Tigers won the Division 3 championship by taking 21 of the 28 matches they wrestled at state, including 10 by pin. Senior Mason Kauffman finished off an undefeated season with a pin and a technical fall in the two matches, ending his year with a 34-0 record.
The Stratford wrestling team joins Columbus Catholic volleyball player Kendra Baierl (September), Columbus Catholic soccer player Nadim Torbey (October), Abbotsford football player Ethan Kramas (November), Owen-Withee girls basketball player Jennifer Wendler (December), Marshfield boys basketball player Ethan Posteluk (January), and Columbus Catholic boys basketball player Tyler Fuerlinger (February) as winners of the award during the 2016-17 school year.
