STEVENS POINT – Stevens Point scored three times in the first 27 minutes and went on to beat Marshfield 5-0 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference girls soccer opener for both teams Thursday at Portage County Youth Soccer Complex.

Olivia Clemens scored in the third and 26th minutes, and Tigist Ficken added another goal for the Panthers at the 27:42 mark to give them a 3-0 lead by halftime.

Stevens Point (4-1, 1-0 Wisconsin Valley Conference) added two more goals in the second half, including a Marshfield own goal with 6:19 remaining.

Marshfield (1-4, 0-1 WVC) was held to six shots on goal, all saved by Stevens Point goalie ToniRea Evans.

“We are in a funk right now and cannot get to where we want to be,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “We need to get the players in the right places to have more success. Right now, we need to keep our heads up and do the things that can make us successful – better passes, traps and space.”

Marshfield hosts Hortonville in a nonconference game Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Griese Park.
