Newman Catholic sweeps Columbus Catholic in WIAA Division 4 volleyball sectional semifinal

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic volleyball team’s superb season came to an end Thursday night with a 3-0 loss to Wausau Newman Catholic in a WIAA Division 4 girls volleyball sectional semifinal at Assumption High School.

Newman won 25-20, 25-8, 25-18, to advance to a sectional final at home Saturday against Florence. The match begins at 4 p.m. The winner qualifies for next week’s 2017 WIAA State Girls Volleyball Tournament at Resch Center in Green Bay.

Newman Catholic has qualified for the state tournament each of the past six years and has won the last four Division 4 state titles.

Columbus Catholic, which won the Cloverbelt Conference East Division championship for the first time, was led by Maren Seefluth, who had seven kills and six digs. Kate Turchi added five kills and Brooke Neider had 18 assists for the Dons.
