Auburndale boys basketball pounds Newman Catholic in season-opener

WAUSAU – The Auburndale boys basketball opened its regular-season and Marawood Conference South Division schedule with a resounding 79-45 victory over Wausau Newman Catholic on Tuesday night at Newman Catholic High School.

The Apaches shot 58 percent from the field, making 26 of 45 shots, and were 6-for-10 from 3-point range in the victory. Auburndale also made 21 of 28 free throws.

The Apaches pulled out to a 42-14 lead by halftime and won going away.

Colton Wright scored 22 points, making 7 of 9 shots overall and 4 of 5 from 3-point range, to lead five Apaches who scored in double figures. Cale Jacoby added 15 points, Cooper Weinfurter had 12 points and seven assists, Cason Schmutzer scored 11 points, and Cameron Ertl chipped in 10 in the victory.

Auburndale plays a nonconference game at Athens on Friday.
