MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield gymnastics team dropped its Great Northern Conference opening dual meet to Stevens Point 133.375-130.7 on Tuesday at Marshfield High School.
Marshfield’s Isabelle Jensen won the balance beam with a score of 8.7 for the Tigers’ lone victory in the four events.
Stevens Point’s Olivia Clemens won the all-around with a score of 34.55, that included event victories in the vault (9.0) and uneven bars (8.3).
Melanie Hafenbredl was second in the uneven bars (9.25), Emma Haugen was third in the vault (8.8), and Jensen and Brooke McGrath tied for third in the floor exercise (8.5) for the Tigers’ other top-three finishes.
“(Stevens Point took the win tonight, but we have definitely closed the gap in comparison to where we used to place against them in the past,” Marshfield coach Allie Dryer said. “Emma had a muscle pull and ended up not competing beam and floor, two events where she is a strong contender for conference titles, which probably affected our team score.
“I was very impressed though with Makenna Yeske stepping into a varsity beam spot and Melanie Hafenbredl’s first night on varsity floor tonight this season. Isabelle Jensen had a great meet tonight winning the beam.”
Marshfield is off until Jan. 6 when it will compete at the Wisconsin Rapids Invitational.
