MARSHFIELD – Marshfield scored eight unanswered points in the first 1:17 of the game and never looked back in an 86-53 blowout of Wausau East in Wisconsin Valley Conference boys basketball action Tuesday night at Marshfield High School.

Seth Anderson drilled three 3-pointers and scored 15 of his game-high 29 points in the opening 5 minutes as the Tigers (6-6, 4-1 Wisconsin Valley Conference) pushed their lead to 24-10 and they led by double digits the rest of the way.

Anderson, a senior forward, has scored in double digits in all but one game this season, and has scored at least 25 points in the past five games to push his season average over 22 points per game.

“Nobody has worked harder,” Marshfield coach Scott Scheuer said. “There’s usually a correlation with time spent on something and improvement. Not only on the court, but in the weight room, that’s why he’s got 40 of 50 schools calling asking ‘Where’s Seth Anderson going to school?’ He continues to improve in season, he’s getting better every game and every practice.”

Reed Miller hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final 3 minutes of the first half, including a double-clutch shot at the first-half buzzer, to give the Tigers a 45-31 lead at the break.

After East (1-9, 0-4 WVC) scored the first four points of the second half to cut it to 10, Marshfield ripped off 14 straight points, which included a 3-pointer by Isaac Meverden, and a three-point play and two more baskets from Anderson, to make it 59-35.

“Isaac and John (Reigel) were the two guys that gave us energy,” Scheuer said. “Isaac played hard the whole game, got a couple of big rebounds, and John had eight rebounds, six offensive rebounds. Grant Urban gave us really good minutes and he’s getting better.

“I’ve got a lot of guys that can make plays on the offensive side, I need those same guys to make them on the defensive side.”

Meverden finished with 14 points, Miller added 12, and Urban and Reigel contributed 11 and nine points, respectively, both season-highs.

Urban, who recently entered the starting lineup, has helped improve the team on the defensive end, as well as take pressure off sophomore Anthony Posteluk, who has moved to a reserve role and flourished as well.

“I saw that he was coming on in practice,” Scheuer said of Urban. “Some of the dunks, the athletic ability, his ability to defense, he wasn’t afraid to set a screen. Sometimes you can’t have five guys that are always looking for their shot, you have to have one or two even to set screens and not really care if they get theirs. He gets excited when he gets a rebound, takes a charge, or scores from two or three feet.

“Anthony has continued to progress coming off the bench. I think it’s paying off. Not that he did anything wrong, I just wanted him to feel more comfortable.”
