Stoughton topples Marshfield in WIAA state team wrestling tournament quarterfinals

MADISON – The Marshfield wrestling team had a historic season for its program, winning its second-straight Wisconsin Valley Conference title, and earning regional and team sectional titles to reach the WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament for the first time since 2003.

Stoughton, the Tigers’ opponent, is at the state team tournament for the fifth-straight season and its experience showed.

Stoughton won all but three matches to dispatch of Marshfield 47-13 in a Division 1 quarterfinal on Friday night at the University of Wisconsin Fieldhouse.

Stoughton went on to win a semifinal match over four-time state champion Kaukauna 34-30 and will take on Holmen for the Division 1 title at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Stoughton won the first three matches to open up a 10-0 lead before Marshfield got on the board as Sam Mitchell earned a major decision over Brooks Empey, 11-3.

Gavin Miller beat Alex Brost at 220 pounds 7-2, and Aodan Marshall edged Connor Berry 3-1 at 285 before Alexander Wicks earned a major decision over Riley Wilcott 10-2 to put Stoughton back up 20-4.

After Marshfield freshman Gabe Pugh pinned Nathan Rein in 4:47, Stoughton won the next five matches, four by pin, to put the match away.

Nolan Hertel earned Marshfield’s final victory, beating Cade Spilde 6-3 at 152.
