WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Auburndale cross country coach Jim Johnson had a simple way to sum up his girls team’s performance Saturday at the WIAA State Cross Country Championships at the Ridges Golf Course.

“Experience matters,” Johnson said.

The Auburndale girls were making their first state meet appearance in 25 years and only one runner, Danica Harrison, had run at state before. That inexperience showed as the Apaches finished 13th among the 16 teams, and only Harrison finished in the top half of the field.

Harrison finished 10th in her third state meet, finishing the 4-kilometer course in 15:28.40. Sam Karl had the next-best finish for Auburndale, taking 79th in 17:04.69.

“We got stuck at the back of the pack and had a hard time moving up,” Johnson said. “We talked about how fast a start it would be, but the girls ran a little tight and did not run like they wanted to. That is, except for Danica. She is used to the type of racing that is needed to be done at the state championship level.”

All seven of the Auburndale runner competing were underclassmen, so Johnson hopes they use Saturday as a learning tool.

“The girls are proud of their effort, but they want to build on this and return next year ready to perform,” Johnson said.

Molly Seidel of University Lake School repeated as the Division 3 girls champ, finishing in 13:44.32 and winning by a whopping 1:06 over Sarah McMahon of Colfax.

Marshfield Columbus Catholic junior Claire Pinter finished 83rd overall with a time of 17:11.78.

Jack Taylor of Webster won the boys Division 3 title.

Statford’s Matt Zuelke wrapped up his career by finishing 41st in 17:33.13. It was his third state meet.
