AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale boys basketball team is heading to sectionals for the second year in a row after a big second-half surge pushed them past Edgar 62-46 in a WIAA Division 4 regional final Saturday night at Auburndale High School.
Auburndale (22-4) trailed 30-25 at halftime before outscoring the Wildcats by 21 points in the second half to pull out the win and advance to a D-4 sectional semifinal against No. 1 seed Marathon (25-1) on Thursday at Merrill High School.
Karter Butt had 10 points and Preston Dahlke eight in the first half as Edgar (19-7) took a five-point lead into the break.
The Eagles buckled down defensively, holding Edgar to just six made baskets in the final 18 minutes and Butt without a point.
Auburndale also picked up its offensive play and made enough free throws down the stretch to expand its lead and finish off the win.
Evan Scholl scored 19 points and Blake Raab made 8 of 9 free throws to finish with 14 points to lead the Eagles.
Auburndale will take on Marathon for the second-straight year in the sectional semifinals. The Eagles won last year’s matchup 55-47, but lost both games this season in Marawood South play, each by 21 points.
