OSSEO – The Spencer/Marshfield Columbus Catholic wrestling team had three athletes compete at the WIAA Division 3 sectional at Osseo-Fairchild High School.
Next week, three Rockets will compete at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Championships.
Trevor Ackman (119 pounds), Nick Vaughan (215) and Kyle Andreae (285) each finished in third place Saturday at the sectional to qualify for the state tournament, which will be held Thursday through Saturday at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Ackman, a freshman, improved to 36-8 by going 3-1 Saturday. He lost his semifinal match before beating Nick Lee of Blair-Taylor 14-7 in the third-place match. He later lost a second-place wrestleback to Peyton Shedd of Flambeau when he was pinned in 18 seconds.
Vaughan, a junior, had to do it the hard way. The junior lost his first match at 215 pounds but came back through the consolation bracket to finish third.
Vaughan (32-12) beat Mitchel Williams of Cadott 5-2 in the third-place match, avenging a loss to Williams at the regional tournament last week. Vaughan lost to Jake Leintz of Clear Lake in a second-place wrestleback.
Andreae (21-9) will be moving on to his first state tournament appearance in his sophomore season. He reached the finals to earn a qualifying spot before losing to Cody Hegeman by pin in 45 seconds. Andreae also was pinned in a second-place wrestleback.
