STEVENS POINT – The Marshfield girls basketball team found itself down 16-8 after the first quarter of Friday’s Wisconsin Valley Conference game, then, like they usually do, the Tigers turned up the heat.

Marshfield outscored Stevens Point 17-9 in the second quarter to tie the game, then blew out the Panthers in the second half on its way to a 53-32 victory.

The Tigers improve to 15-2 and 9-0 in the Wisconsin Valley after outscoring SPASH 22-3 in the third quarter and 28-7 overall in the second half.

“We worked harder on the defensive end, got in the passing lanes and had some run-outs and our shots started falling,” Marshfield coach Heidi Michaelis said of the Tigers’ play from the second quarter on.

Taylor Varsho scored 17 points and her sister Andie Varsho had 16 points. Both hit three 3-pointers, which isn’t so unusual for Taylor, but it is for Andie. Andie hadn’t made a 3-pointer in the Tigers’ eight previous Valley games.

Andie Varsho hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter to spark Marshfield’s surge back into the game.

“We were struggling and she just stepped up and made two big 3s for us to right the ship and help us finish the first half strong,” Michaelis said.

Marshfield hosts D.C. Everest on Tuesday with a chance to clinch at least a tie for the Wisconsin Valley Conference title, which would be the sixth in the last eight years for the Tigers.
