CORRECTION (Feb. 5): Spencer 220-pounder Nick Vaughan won all four of his matches to take the Cloverbelt Conference title. Trackwrestling.com had incorrect information posted regarding his match against Mitchel Williams of Cadott. Vaughan earned a first-period pin, not Williams as originally reported.

OSSEO – The Spencer wrestling team finished second behind Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal on Saturday at the 2012 Cloverbelt Conference Wrestling Meet at Osseo-Fairchild High School.

Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal totaled 219 points, with Spencer second with 157 and Abbotsford/Colby third with 115.

Spencer had four champions and one runner-up finish in the round-robin tournament.

Trevor Ackman (125 pounds) went 4-0 with two pins and Rudy Nieman (138) was 4-0 with three pins for the Rockets. Nick Vaughan was also 4-0, pinning all four of his opponents, to win at 220 pounds. He pinned Mitchel Williams of Cadott in 1:32 to win his final match and take the title. Lance Neumann went 2-0 to win the 182-pound bracket that had just three wrestlers.

Dan Schubert (160) went 3-1 to take second place for Spencer.

The four champions by Spencer was the most by the team since the 1999 Cloverbelt Conference Meet.

“It was a good day for our team,” Spencer coach Jake Zschernitz said. “Trevor, Rudy, Lance, Nick and Danny all wrestled very well. The rest of the guys did their part and picked up some wins to help the team take second place.”

Spencer will compete in a WIAA Division 2 regional at Neillsville next Saturday. The top two finishers in each weight class at the regional move on to the WIAA Division 2 sectional at Somerset on Feb. 18. The WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament is set for Feb. 23-25 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
