SPENCER – The Spencer volleyball team didn’t finish the regular season a win, but it played hard and well nonetheless.

Eau Claire Regis knocked off Spencer 25-19, 18-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-10, in the Cloverbelt Conference first-place crossover match on Thursday night at Spencer High School in a five-game barn-burner.

“What an incredible high school volleyball match,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “Anyone who doesn’t think the Cloverbelt is a strong conference should have been there tonight. Both teams battled so hard, you hated to see someone lose…especially us.”

Tara Matter had 14 kills, two blocks and two aces, Paige Johnson had 28 digs and 12 kills, and Brooke Kettleborough had a team-high 44 assists for the Rockets. Alicia Endreas added 34 digs and Tynae Phillips had 10 kills as well for Spencer.

Spencer hosts Stratford in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday in its postseason opener. The Rockets are looking for a second-straight trip to the WIAA state tournament after finishing as the Division 3 runner-up a year ago.
