Spencer boys basketball wins season opener on road at Gilman

GILMAN – The Spencer boys basketball team started off the 2012-13 season on a strong note, posting a 49-39 win over Gilman on Friday night in the Cloverbelt Conference East Division and season openers for both teams.

Spencer pulled out to a 29-20 lead by halftime and led the rest of the way.

Cody Esser scored 14 points and had five assists, and Miles Weber had six points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Rockets, who had seven players enter the scoring column.

Spencer shot just 36 percent, but held Gilman to 33 percent and watched the Pirates miss nine of 17 free throw attempts. The Rockets dominated the boards, outrebounding Gilman 32-13, and outscored them 20-10 in the paint.

Tyler Amborn had 15 points for Gilman.

Spencer plays at Colby on Tuesday.
