SPENCER – For all but one play, the Spencer/Columbus Catholic football team completely dominated the line of scrimmage – and it led to a lopsided victory.

Spencer/Columbus scored on seven of its first nine possessions and rolled to a 50-12 nonconference win over Ashland on Saturday at Ted Fritsch Field at Spencer High School.

Tyler Voda ran for 110 yards and four touchdowns for the Rockets, who improve to 2-2 this season. Ashland falls to 0-4.

Voda capped the opening drive of the game for the Rockets with a 10-yard touchdown run and added a 1-yard plunge for a score with 1 seconds left in the first quarter to give Spencer/Columbus a 15-0 lead.

S/C then scored the first three times it had the ball in the second quarter, running just 14 plays to do so.

Joe Meyers had a 6-yard TD run and Voda ran in from 5 yards to put the Rockets up 29-0.

After Ashland running back Jake Nemec ran 81 yards for a touchdown, the Rockets quickly retaliated when Derrick Green hauled in a 44-yard touchdown pass from Calvin Lenz and S/C led 37-6 at halftime.

“I thought our guys up front did a nice job opening up some holes, the running backs ran the ball hard and we had a balanced attack and were spreading the ball around a bit,” Spencer/Columbus coach Jason Gorst said.

Spencer/Columbus pushed the lead to 50-6 with touchdown runs of 6 yards by Mitch Susa and 20 yards from Voda.

Ashland put together a 15-play, 76-yard drive for a score – a 3-yard TD run by Ben Cashman – bridging the final 3:48 of the third quarter and first 4:37 of the fourth quarter for the game’s final score.

Meyers added 67 yards and Susa 64 on the ground for the Rockets.

Spencer/Columbus travels to play at Eau Claire Regis next Saturday in a Cloverbelt Conference game. The game, which will start at 1 p.m. at Carson Park in Eau Claire, will be broadcast on WDLB-AM 1450 and wdlbwosq.com.

“We just have to be consistent with what we do,” Gorst said. “We have to work hard and make sure that every week we’re a better football team than we were the week before.”
