Wayzata, Chequamegon sweep division titles at annual Columbus Catholic Cross Country Invitational

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys and girls each placed third in Division 3 and the Marshfield teams each took fifth in Division 1 on Saturday at the 42nd annual Columbus Catholic Cross Country Invitational at Wildwood Park.

Wayzata (Minn.) won both the boys and girls team titles in Division 1, with the Benilde-St. Margaret’s (Minn.) boys and West Salem girls taking first in Division 2, and Chequamegon winning both Division 3 team titles.

The Wayzata boys dominated, with Jaret Carpenter winning the overall boys title in a time of 15:42.6, 16 seconds ahead of second-place Kevin Koski of Chequamegon. Wayzata also had the sixth- through 11th-place finishes.

Freshman Carter Chojnacki led the Marshfield boys as he finished 46th in 19 minutes flat.

Leonard Steinert topped the Columbus boys, taking 48th in 19:02.9.

Morgan Irish was the Marshfield girls top finisher, running in 21:35.7 to finish 33rd.

The Columbus Catholic girls top finisher was Hailey Roehl, who took 59th in 23:33.3.

Emily Covert of Minneapolis Washburn won the girls title in 18:29.7, 11.9 seconds ahead of Mae Fuller of Benilde-St. Margaret’s.

Both teams will compete at the Marshfield Tigers Invitational on Tuesday at Wildwood Park.
