Stratford’s Miner, Auburndale’s Jewell shine at annual Smiley Cross Country Invitational

WAUSAU – Stratford’s Johnelle Miner was sixth in the Division 2 girls race and Auburndale’s Isabella Jewell took eighth in the Division 3 girls race for the three local teams’ top finishes at the 2015 Smiley Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at Tribute Golf Course. The meet was hosted by Wausau East.

Miner was sixth in the Division 2 girls race in 21:08.78, 23 seconds behind winner Alissa Niggemann of Amherst. The Stratford girls finishes seventh in the team standings. West Salem won the D-2 girls team title.

The Auburndale girls took fourth place in Division 3 and was led by Jewell, who was eighth in 21:06.22. Teammate Kali Karl took 13th in 21:41.42.

The Spencer girls were 10th in D-3. Nadia King was the Rockets’ top runner, taking 24th in 22:17.99.

The Marshfield girls were ninth and the boys took 11th in the Division 1 Large Schools division.

The Marshfield girls top finishers were Morgan Irish, who was 29th in 20:52.46, and Dani Bender, who took 30th in 20:54.29.

Irish and Bender both had career-best finishes in 5,000-meter events for the Tigers and cracked the top-10 all-time for the Marshfield program since 1990. Irish is now eighth and Bender ninth on the all-time list. Rebecca Voss holds the school record with a run of 19:03 at the 2010 Eau Claire Memorial Invitational.

Marshfield’s top finishes for the boys were from sophomore Jordan Dzikowich, who was 52nd in 18:40, and freshman Carter Chojancki, who finishes 55th in 18:46.

The Stratford boys took eighth in Division 2, led by John Geissinger, who was 21st in 18:01.10.

The Auburndale and Spencer boys did not field complete teams in Division 3.

Carver Empey took 37th for the Auburndale boys, while Bobby Pilz led Spencer, taking 63rd in 22:22.54.
