MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Post 54 American Legion baseball team split a Wisconsin Valley Legion League doubleheader with Merrill on Thursday night, winning 18-3 and losing 7-6, at Jack Hackman Field.
Marshfield has now lost three of four games and are 7-3 overall and 5-3 in the WVLL.
Game 1 was a make-up from Wednesday’s scheduled game at Merrill that was rained out.
The Blue Devils jumped on Merrill with a nine-run second inning and put the game away with a seven-run sixth, ending the first game via the 10-run rule.
Jacob Neve scattered 11 hits to earn the complete-game victory, and all nine starters for Marshfield reached base and either scored or drove in at least one run. Logan Jakobi led the way, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
In Game 2, Marshfield led 3-1 after five innings, but Merrill scored six times in the sixth to take the lead.
The Blue Devils chipped away to cut the deficit to 7-4 entering the seventh and had one more rally in them.
Jake Brueggen led off with a single and Connor Jasurda doubled to start the inning. Jared Johnsrud grounded out to score pinch runner Dom Wichlacz, and Austin Palacek it a sacrifice fly to plate Jasurda, but Merrill was able to get the final out to secure the victory.
Marshfield will take part in the La Crosse Legion Tournament this weekend, playing two games Friday and two more Saturday.
