Hortonville runs past Marshfield in second half to win WIAA Division 2 girls basketball sectional semifinal

ANTIGO – Hortonville blitzed Marshfield with a sizzling second-half performance and rolled to a 77-36 victory in a WIAA Division 2 girls basketball sectional semifinal Thursday night at Antigo High School.

Hortonville jumped out to an 11-point lead early in the first half before Marshfield rallied to tie the game at 22-22.

The Polar Bears took a 27-24 lead into halftime and came out on fire in the second half, using a 22-2 run during the first 5 minutes to blow the game open.

Hortonville (19-6) moves into a D-2 sectional final against Onalaska (22-3) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Stevens Point Area Senior High School. The winner moves on to the 2018 WIAA State Girls Basketball Tournament at the Resch Center in Green Bay on March 8-10. Hortonville is looking for its second-straight trip to state.

Shay Frederick, a Valparaiso University recruit, made a pair of 3-pointers in the opening seconds of the second half to spark the run for the Polar Bears. She ended up making four 3-pointers in the second half and finished with 18 points.

Macy McGlone scored 17 of her game-high 23 points in the second half for Hortonville, which extended the lead to 60-28 on a 33-4 run that ended with nine minutes to go. McGlone also had 16 rebounds in the win.

Meg Bryan scored eight points and Maddie Michaelis added seven for the Tigers, who finish the season with a 12-13 record.

Marshfield shot just 30 percent (15 of 50), while Hortonville made 55 percent of its shots (29-53) and was 10-for-19 from 3-point range.
