SPENCER – The Spencer/Marshfield Columbus Catholic football team lost its season opener Friday, falling to defending WIAA Division 6 state champion Edgar 29-0 in a nonconference game at Spencer High School.
The Rockets’ defense held its own for nearly the entire first half before Edgar scored just before halftime when Jorie Skrzypchak ran in from 3 yards out. The Wildcats had a two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead.
Spencer/Columbus was stymied by Edgar’s vaunted defense throughout the game.
The Rockets managed just three first downs and 24 total yards in the game.
Edgar got its offense going a little more in the second half, scoring two third-quarter touchdowns and adding another in the fourth. The Wildcats finished with 288 yards, 279 on the ground.
Skrzypchak scored on a 3-yard run in the third and on a 10-yard run in the fourth. He led the Wildcats with 120 yards on 24 carries. Gavin Borchardt added Edgar’s other touchdown late in the third quarter.
Kyle Schueller added 90 yards on just eight carries for Edgar.
The Rockets open Cloverbelt Conference action on Sept. 3 at home against Osseo-Fairchild.
