Spencer, Auburndale, Columbus Catholic combine for seven medals as 2018 WIAA State Track & Field Championships concludes

Area athletes picked up seven more medals as the 2018 WIAA State Track & Field Championships concluded Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Marshfield Columbus Catholic’s Noah Eckelberg picked up a pair of gold medals and a silver medal in wheelchair events. He won the 400 meters in 1:05.45 and the 800 meters in 2:17.65, and also took second in the 100 meters in 19.77 seconds. In all, Eckelberg earned four state medals, as he placed fourth in the shot put on Friday.

Spencer junior Logan Zschernitz finished second in the Division 3 boys shot put with a toss of 54 feet, 4 ¼ inches, to earn one of three medals for the Rockets on Saturday.

Hannah Zastrow took third in the D-3 girls 110-meter hurdles in 15.33 seconds and Aaron Pankratz was fourth in the boys 400 meters in 50.95 seconds to bring Spencer’s medal total to six at the state meet. Zastrow and Zschernitz also picked up medals on Friday.

Zastrow also competed in the D-3 girls pole vault, finishing seventh with a vault of 9-6.

Auburndale earned a pair of medals as well on Saturday. The girls 1,600-meter relay team of Kali Karl, Isabelle Hilber, Isabella Jewell and Paityn Hamus took second in 4:06.58.

Karl also earned an individual medal, taking sixth in the D-3 girls 800 meters, running in 2:20.56.

Auburndale’s girls 800-meter relay team of Hamus, Hilber, Maddie Krings and Kaitlyn Trowbridge finished 10th in 1:50.75, Julianna Kollross took 12th in the pole vault with a vault of 9-0, and Jewell took ninth in the 400 meters in 1:00.73.

Marshfield’s three athletes competing Saturday all missed out on medals.

Meg Bryan took ninth in the Division 1 girls long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 9 ½ inches; Adam Maki tied for 13th in the boys pole vault with a vault of 13 feet; and Joey Goettl placed 18th in the boys triple jump with a jump of 41-11½.

Kimberly (Division 1), Rice Lake (Division 2), and Cambridge (Division 3) won boys team titles, while Waukesha West (Division 1), Wittenberg-Birnamwood (Division 2), and Benton (Division 3) earned girls team titles.
