Marshfield wrestling wins six individual titles, team championship at Shawano Holiday Classic

SHAWANO – The Marshfield and Spencer/Columbus Catholic wrestling teams combined for nine of the 14 weight class titles at the Shawano Holiday Classic on Saturday at Shawano High School.

Marshfield won six individual titles and captured the team title as well with 556 points, 75 ahead of second-place Brillion. Spencer/Columbus, which won three individual championships, finished sixth out of the 15 teams at the meet with 296 points.

Spencer/Columbus and Marshfield split four matchups in championship matches.

The Rockets’ wins came from Treyton Ackman at 113 pounds, as he beat Marshfield’s Keagan Cliver 6-1, and Ashton Ackman, who knocked off Shane Westerhausen of Marshfield 8-6 in the 120-pound title bout.

Marshfield’s Gabe Pugh (14-1) beat SC’s Leonardo Rodriguez with a pin in 2:44 in the 126-pound championship, and the Tigers’ Nolan Hertel (15-0) pinned Spencer/Columbus’ Carson Hildebrandt (10-1) in 4:34 at 160 pounds in a battle of unbeaten wrestlers.

Marshfield’s other individual victories came from Tanner Kanable at 138 pounds, Caden Pearce at 152, Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann at 170, and Sam Mitchell at 195. Schwanebeck-Ostermann and Mitchell are both 15-0 this season.

Spencer/Columbus senior Logan Zschernitz, the defending Division 2 state champion at 285 pounds, won that weight class title with a 18-3 technical fall victory over Travis Kuhnke of New London to improve to 11-0.

Marshfield will be at Merrill and Spencer/Columbus at Cadott on Thursday.
