SPENCER – Marathon swept the team titles at the Spencer Track & Field Invitational on Tuesday at Spencer High School.
The Marathon boys won the team championship with 184 points, 37 ahead of second-place Stanley-Boyd. Spencer was fourth with 81 points and Auburndale tied for sixth among the eight teams with Greenwood with 38 points.
On the girls side, Marathon racked up 170 points to finish ahead of second-place Colby, which had 133½ points. Auburndale finished fourth with 101½ points and Spencer was fifth with 83.
Spencer’s Mason Barth won three events, taking first in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.16 seconds, the 300 hurdles in 41.90 seconds, and the pole vault with a vault of 11 feet. The only person keeping him from four titles was Stanley-Boyd’s Jordan McKnight.
McKnight won the long jump (19-5) to edge Barth (19-0) for the title. McKnight also captured first in the 100 meters (11.12), 200 (23.18) and 400 (52.61) to grab the rare quadruple win at the meet.
Spencer senior Logan Zschernitz also continued his strong season in the field events, taking first in the shot put (52-10½) and the discus (162-4). Teammate Nate Karau finished second in the discus (155-4).
Auburndale’s top finishes came from Brent Lau, who was second in the pole vault (10-0), third in the 100 (12.35), and fourth in the 200 (24.76).
Paul Kollross also took third in the 800 (2:15.06) for Auburndale.
The Auburdale girls won all four relay races and also had three individual titleists.
The Apaches’ 400-meter relay team of Maddie Krings, Isabelle Hilber, Aliah Hamus and Paityn Hamus won in 53.20 seconds; the 800 team of Macie Schmeiser, Annalise Jewell, Isabelle Hilber and Paityn Hamus won in 1:52.22; the 1,600 team of Paityn Hamus, Schmeiser, Hilber and Isabella Jewell was victorious in 4:20.38; and the 3,200 team of Schmeiser, Erricka Zenner, Jordyn Karl and Vanessa Mitchell won in 10:18.80.
Isabella Jewell won the 400 in 1:02.41, Autumn Richardson took first in the 3,200 in 14:05.45, and Julianna Kollross finished first in the pole vault (9-0) for the Apaches.
Spencer earned victories from Hannah Zastrow in the high jump (5-6) and in the 100 hurdles (15.57).
