MARSHFIELD – After being rained out on Friday night, and the entire day of the 17U Junior American Legion Baseball Tournament postponed on Saturday, the Marshfield Post 54 Blue Devils finally opened play at the double-elimination tournament on Sunday.

Marshfield lost its opener to Chippewa Falls 7-1 before coming back to beat Plover in an elimination game 13-11 at Jack Hackman Field.

With its season on the line, Marshfield did something it had not been able to do all season and that was beat the Black Sox.

Plover had won all six regular-season meetings against the Blue Devils, but Marshfield was able win a wild one Sunday night.

Marshfield led 4-0, Plover came back to tie it, then the Blue Devils scored seven times in the top of the fourth.

Plover retaliated again with five runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to tie the game at 11-11.

Marshfield pulled ahead again with a two-run seventh. Trey Montalvo singled, stole second, and scored on an error. Chase Higgins reached on the error, moved to second on a single by Peter Earll and came home on a wild pitch to put the Blue Devils on top 13-11.

Nick Urban allowed a walk and a single in the bottom of the seventh, but was able to coax a groundout and a strikeout to finish off the victory. He threw 2 2/3 innings with three strikeouts to earn the win in relief of starter Logan Homolka.

Montalvo finished 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI for Marshfield. Urban added three hits, three runs and three RBIs, Homolka had three hits and two RBIs, and Earll had a pair of singles and an RBI in the victory.

Against Chippewa Falls, Marshfield was held to four hits and scored just a single run, on an RBI by Higgins in the fourth inning.

Parker Weik had two of the Blue Devils’ four hits.

In other games Sunday, Manitowoc slipped past Appleton Double Days 1-0 in an elimination game, and in the winners’ bracket games, Racine beat Fond du Lac 9-4 and Bay Port topped Chippewa Falls 3-1.

Play will continue with five games on Monday. Marshfield will take on Fond du Lac in an elimination game at 9 a.m., followed by the second losers’ bracket game between Manitowoc and Chippewa Falls. Racine and Bay Port will play in the final winners’ bracket game at 2 p.m. Play will continue with games at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to set up the championship round, which will start at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
