ATHENS – Tomahawk swept the team titles at the Athens Cross Country Invitational on Thursday at Erbach Park.
The Tomahawk boys had a pair of top-five finishes and ended up with 47 points, well ahead of second-place Gillett (71). Host Athens was third with 80, Stratford fourth with 94, Auburndale fifth with 111, Colby/Abbotsford seventh with 204, and Spencer ninth with 258. Wisconsin Rapids Assumption and Marshfield Columbus Catholic had incomplete teams.
Assumption’s Garrett Dolan won the boys five-kilometer race in 16:31.8, 32 seconds ahead of Johnathon Nowacki of Athens, who was second in 17:03.9.
Auburndale’s Carl Lundgren was seventh in 17:35.7 and Stratford’s James Heeg took eighth in 17:37.9 to lead their respective teams.
Andrew Scheer was Columbus Catholic’s top runner, taking 36th in 19:20.6, and Cameron Nieman led Spencer, taking 57th in 20:31.4.
Tomahawk’s Haley Voermans-Dean won the girls race in 19:41.1, with teammate Emily Lacina second in 20:22.2 to lead the Hatchets to the team title with 49 points. Auburndale was a distant second with 74, Assumption was fourth with 122, Colby/Abbotsford fifth with 135, Athens eighth with 195, Stratford ninth with 202, Spencer 11th with 296, and Columbus Catholic 13th with 358.
Auburndale had four top-20 finishes. Erricka Zenner was ninth in 20:56.4, McKenna Zieher was 12th in 21:06, Jordyn Karl took 14th in 21:07, and Lily Kloos was 18th in 21:57.
Stratford’s Ella Heidman was 26th (22:28.8), Emily Wehrman took 51st (23:50.4) for Spencer, and Niah Jakel was 72nd (25:08.7) for Columbus Catholic to lead their respective teams.
