Marshfield girls team, Hoerneman qualify for sectionals at WIAA Division 1 cross country Medford subsectional

MEDFORD – The Marshfield girls team and Henry Hoerneman from the boys squad are moving on to sectionals after competing at the WIAA Division 1 cross country subsectional Wednesday at Medford High School.

The Marshfield girls had four finishers in the top nine and another take 15th place as it won the team title with 42 points, nine ahead of Medford. Both teams, and the top five individuals not on those teams, move on to the Division 1 sectional Saturday at Lake Wissota Golf Course in Chippewa Falls.

Elizabeth Schmidt of Merrill won the girls race in 19:39, six seconds ahead of D.C. Everest’s Sara Mlodik. Eliana Kanitz was third (20:19), Meghan Jaeger seventh (21:01), Michaela Dick eighth (21:10), Calleigh Kanitz ninth (21:11), and Dehlia Kilty 15th (21:37) for Marshfield.

Other individual girls qualifiers for the sectional were Lakeland’s Kate Melms (fifth, 20:44), Kate Fitzgerald of Mosinee (10th, 21:12), and Grace Kern of Lakeland (12th, 21:15).

“Our girls ran well today and it was a team effort,” Marshfield coach Dan Akin said. “They will remember this course and these conditions for a long time. Medford did a great job getting their course ready to race.”

Hoerneman finished sixth in 18:11 to lead the Marshfield boys, and secure one of the five individual sectional qualifying spots.

Medford’s Joe Sullivan won the boys race in 17:33, six seconds in front of D.C. Everest’s A.J. Appel. Everest’s Lucas Allen took third in 17:42.

Wausau West won the boys team title with 46 points on the strength of three top-10 finishes. D.C. Everest was second with 68 to lock up the other team qualifying spot at the sectional.

In addition to Sullivan and Hoerneman, the other individual sectional qualifiers for the boys were Lakeland’s Owen Clark (seventh, 18:25) and Scott Balas (ninth, 18:42), and Wausau East’s Zander Nilles (10th, 18:43).

The top two teams and top five individuals not on the qualifying teams will move on to the WIAA State Cross Country Championships on Oct. 31. Sites for each division have yet to be announced.
