MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield football team lost its fourth-straight game, dropping a nonconference home matchup with Chippewa Falls 22-8 on Friday night at Heiting Community Stadium at Marshfield High School.

Chippewa Falls took the lead midway through the first quarter when Ben Steinmetz raced 38 yards for a touchdown following a short Marshfield punt to go up 7-0.

For the first time this season, the Tigers got their passing game going in the second quarter. Will Fetting complted passes of 4 and 9 yards to Wyatt LeMoine, and had a 27-yard completion to Simon Slade, and Trevor Foemmel connected with Slade for 10 yards, setting up an 8-yard touchdown run by Logan Durham. Matthew Trulen added a two-point conversion run to give Marshfield an 8-7 lead.

The lead was short-lived as Chippewa Falls’ Isaac Frenette returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a score and the Cardinals led 14-8, which held until halftime.

The Cardinals opened up their lead in the third quarter on a pair of unusual plays.

Quarterback Brayden Warwick hit Frenette on a short pass and the speedy receiver raced down the middle of the field for a long gain. As he was tackled, the ball came loose and bounced forward into the end zone where Bruce Sanborn landed on it for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed and Chippewa Falls led 20-8.

The Cardinals added a safety two minutes later as Marshfield’s snap on a punt was high. The ball rolled into the end zone and was recovered by the Tigers, saving a touchdown but ending up as a safety.

Marshfield was able to reach midfield before turning the ball over on downs late in the fourth quarter, effectively ending the game with less than 3 minutes to go.

Marshfield’s defense was again stout, allowing just 221 yards and six first downs, but the Tigers managed only 210 yards, 132 through the air.

LeMoine led the Tigers with eight catches for 62 yards.

Marshfield hosts Hortonville for a Valley Football Association game Nov. 6 at Heiting Community Stadium at 7 p.m.
