Columbus Catholic finishes second at Auburndale Volleyball Invite

AUBURNDALE – Mosinee went undefeated, defeating Marshfield Columbus Catholic in the championship match, to win the Auburndale Volleyball Invitational on Saturday at Auburndale High School.

Mosinee defeated Stratford 25-16, 25-18; Assumption 25-18, 25-23; and Iola-Scandinavia 25-14, 25-18 in pool play, then knocked off Stevens Point Pacelli in the semifinals 25-11, 25-16, before beating Columbus Catholic 25-14, 21-25, 15-6, in the finals.

Jenna Placek led Mosinee (16-1 overall) with 30 kills and eight blocks, Jessica Maurer added 29 kills, nine aces and 30 digs, and Alexis Jonas had 86 assists, seven aces and 21 digs in the Indians’ five matches.

Abbi Martin added 26 kills, Dannica Shupe had 16 kills, Tristan Wicklund had 15 assistsa nd 16 digs, and Claire Selenske had 13 kills, seven aces and 27 digs for Mosinee.

Columbus Catholic reached the finals by sweeping its three matches in pool play, winning 25-12, 25-6 over Nekoosa, 25-10, 25-15 over Auburndale, and 25-22, 25-12, over Pacelli. The Dons beat Stratford in the semifinals 25-16, 25-13, before falling to Mosinee.

Dorci Walker had 55 kills, 11 blocks, 15 digs and five service aces in another strong performance for Columbus Catholic. Jenna Kibbel added 19 kills, 13 digs and six aces, Courtney Sommer had a team-high 67 assists and added 12 kills and 13 blocks, Izzy Hoglund chipped in 29 digs, 23 assists and a team-high eight aces, and Lily Stratman had 59 assists as well for the Dons.

Auburndale went 3-2 and finished fifth. The Eagles lost to Columbus and Pacelli 25-15, 25-21, before winning three in a row over Nekoosa 17-25, 25-16, 25-13; Assumption 25-21, 25-18; and Iola-Scandinavia 25-21, 25-16.

Josie Ertl lead Auburndale in kills with 36 in the five matches. Ashlyn Grimm had 30 assists, Nicole Marth added 19 assists and Ashlyn Guldan led the Eagles with 16 digs.

Assumption ended up going 2-3. The Royals beat Iola-Scandinavia 25-13, 25-15, and Nekoosa 25-15, 25-18. In addition to the losses to Auburndale and Mosinee, the Royals lost to Stratford in three sets 19-25, 26-24, 15-12.

Maleia Kolo had 32 digs and 23 kills, Jayden Glaza had 44 assists, Kendell Duellman had 24 digs and 11 service aces, and Autumn Moon had 18 kills and 22 digs in the Royals’ five matches.

Stratford finished third, defeating Pacelli 2-1 in the third-place match. Stats were not reported.
