MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic volleyball team is one win away from its first state tournament after grinding out a 3-1 win over Edgar in a WIAA Division 4 sectional semifinal Thursday night at Columbus Catholic High School.

The top-seeded Dons won 25-13, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21, to advance to the D-4 sectional final at Bowler on Saturday against Wabeno/Laona, which pulled off a 3-0 upset of top seed Three Lakes in the other half of the sectional bracket on Thursday.

Columbus Catholic’s all-time kill leader and two-time Cloverbelt Conference East Division Player of the Year Dorci Walker had 13 kills before going down with an ankle injury in the second set.

The Dons went on to win that second set before Edgar responded with a hard-fought 25-23 victory in the third set. The momentum was short-lived, however, as Columbus Catholic closed out the match with a 25-21 victory in the fourth set, sending the Dons to the sectional final.

“Dorci went down, and players coming up off the bench and saying ‘I’m ready Coach, I’m ready, I’ll take on that role,” Columbus Catholic coach Kat Egle said. “They did it for her, for themselves. We are a team. One girl goes down, the rest come up and we really played together so well.”

Courtney Sommer had six kills, 10 digs, 19 assists and four blocks in a terrific all-around performance for Columbus Catholic. Jenna Kibbel added eight kills and 28 digs, Izzy Hoglund had 22 digs, and Lily Stratman chipped in 12 assists for the Dons.
