MARKESAN – Trayton Weber threw a touchdown pass to Tim Schmitt and ran in another in the fourth quarter to help push the sixth-seeded Auburndale football team to a 19-9 upset win over No. 2 seed Markesan in a WIAA Division 6 Level 2 playoff game Friday night at Markesan High School.
Markesan led 2-0 after a hard-fought first half. A safety in the first quarter on a blocked punt out of the end zone by the Hornets was the only score.
Auburndale led briefly after a 14-yard run by Alex Willfahrt in the third quarter before Markesan regained a 9-6 advantage on a 6-yard run by Tyler Mast and an extra point kick.
The Eagles fought back, with Weber hitting Schmitt for a 5-yard touchdown pass with approximately 9 minutes left to take the lead 13-9.
Auburndale added an insurance score later as Weber scampered 47 yards for a score and the Eagles held on from there.
Auburndale (10-3) will play at No. 1 seed Colby (13-1) in a Level 3 matchup next Friday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. The Hornets defeated Auburndale 54-7 in the final week of the regular season on Oct. 15 in a Marawood Conference matchup.
Evan Scholl finished with 142 yards rushing to lead the Auburndale attack, which was missing starting running back Terrance Roberson. Weber added another 83 on the ground as the Eagles racked up 259 yards rushing.
