MARSHFIELD – The University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/Wood County women’s basketball team led by 13 points at halftime, but having only five players active for its game Saturday against UW-Washington County proved costly.

The Marauders missed some free throws down the stretch and lost a 58-57 decision to Washington County on Saturday afternoon at the UW-Marshfield Gym, falling to 0-3 on the season.

Marshfield shot 48 percent in the first half but couldn’t keep up that pace in the second half of the loss.

Marshfield Columbus Catholic graduates Paige Albrecht and Kayla Fleischmann led the Marauders with 32 points and 11 points, respectively.

“We had a nice lead at the half and Anna Steil came out and basically put on a shooting clinic,” Marauders coach Lori Galetka said. “I thought we played very good defense for having only five players and the girls never quit. I’m very proud of them.”

UW-Marshfield hosts UW-Marinette on Wednesday.
