Edgar softball edges Auburndale in pitchers’ duel

AUBURNDALE – Edgar scored the only run of the game in the top of the fourth inning to outlast Auburndale 1-0 in a Marawood Conference South Division softball pitchers’ duel Monday at Auburndale High School.

Edgar pitcher Makayla Wirkus doubled home Ashley Erickson with two outs in the top of the fourth inning for the game’s only run.

Wirkus allowed just two hits and struck out 14 to earn the win for the Wildcats, who were playing their season opener.

Ashlyn Grimm suffered the loss for Auburndale (0-2 overall). She struck out 10 and walked three, scattering eight hits.

The two teams will play again Tuesday at Edgar.
