SHEBOYGAN – Kale Weisenberger delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth inning to lift the Marshfield Post 54 baseball team to a 6-5 win over Genoa City in an elimination game at the Wisconsin Class AAA American Legion Baseball State Tournament on Wednesday at Wildwood Park.
Marshfield (23-14) keeps its season alive for another day and will take on De Pere (23-13) in another elimination game Thursday at 1 p.m. De Pere lost to Manitowoc in a winners’ bracket game 5-3 on Wednesday.
The first four Marshfield batters reached to start the game the Blue Devils took a quick 3-0 lead in the opening inning.
Riley Bauman had an RBI single, Cole Timmler had a sacrifice fly, and Carsten Jirschele plated a run with a fielder’s choice grounder.
Marshfield pushed the lead to 4-0 on a Brock Bennington solo home run in the top of the second, before Genoa City rallied.
The Predators scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the second, and an error led to another run in the third as they tied the game at 4-4.
Genoa City pushed ahead with a run in the sixth against Marshfield reliever Brady Schmidt, his only blemish in 3 1/3 innings in relief of starter Braeden Schueller.
Marshfield quickly tied it in the top of the seventh as Nick Urban led off with a double, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a sac fly by Timmler.
Both teams stranded the potential go-ahead runs over the next two frames before the Blue Devils struck for a run in the ninth as Weisenberger singled to center to score Timmler.
Bauman worked around a walk to finish off the win on the mound for Marshfield in the ninth as he worked the final 2 2/3 innings and struck out one.
Logan Homolka, Bauman and Urban each had two hits for Marshfield, which had nine in all.
