MARSHFIELD – Every time Owen-Withee would make a run in the second half, Marshfield Columbus Catholic would match it.

Columbus Catholic used a 7-0 run early to take the lead for good and the Dons matched Owen-Withee blow for blow in the second half, holding on for a 50-39 win in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division girls basketball game Friday night at Columbus Catholic High School.

The Dons even their record at 4-4 and move to 3-1 in the Cloverbelt East, while Owen-Withee falls to 1-5 and 1-4 in conference play.

After Owen-Withee scored the game’s first points, Maggie Callaghan came off the bench and drilled a pair of 3-pointers to put the Dons ahead at 10-3. They never trailed again.

A three-point play by Callaghan and a hoop from Lily Stratman helped the Dons build a 20-11 lead at halftime.

Owen-Withee was able to stay close for the first 10 minutes of the second half as Ellie Petersen hit a pair of shots in an 11-4 run that cut Columbus’ lead to 29-25 with 8:14 to go.

Another Callaghan 3-pointer put the Dons back up by eight and they were able to maintain that advantage. Gracie Wilczek made two 3s and had a conventional three-point play to help push the lead to 12 and the Dons were able to put the game away at the free throw line, making nine of 14 in the final 4½ minutes.

Callaghan finished with 14 points, Wilczek had 11, and Jenna Kibbel had nine points and 12 rebounds for the Dons.

Reina Arndt scored 14 points for Owen-Withee.

Columbus Catholic will return to action Thursday at home for a conference matchup against Gilman.
