MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield wrestling team started out with four straight wins to open its match against Wausau West but couldn’t hold on, losing its Wisconsin Valley Conference dual meet opener 37-30 to the Warriors on Thursday night at Marshfield High School.

Following the four wins, which included an 18-3 technical fall win by Brad Dolezal at 160 pounds and a pin by Ben Wartella at 215, West won six matches in a row, four by pin.

Marshfield responded with three more wins by Daniel Barton (135), Torin Boernke (140) and Josh Shupe (145), setting up a winner-take-all match at 152.

West’s Eric Kostroski won the final match, beating Kyler Strobel 13-6 in the 152-pound match to secure the victory for the Warriors.

“I am proud of our seniors and how they have stepped up this year,” Marshfield coach Don Lang said. “They are really the workhorses of this team. Robert Wille and Ben Wartella really wrestled solid matches and junior Justin Sternweis fought off his back in the waning seconds of the final period and escaped to win the match.

“The season is young…this was a good test for us and we are right there
with some of the best teams in the state. It should be a fun season.”

Marshfield is back in action Saturday at the Neenah Invitational.
