RHINELANDER – The Marshfield girls soccer team’s season came to a heartbreaking end with a 3-2 overtime loss at Rhinelander on Thursday in a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal.

Sixth-seeded Marshfield finishes the year with a 6-13-1 record. No. 3 Rhinelander (16-3) moves on to a regional final at No. 2 Pulaski on Saturday.

Rhinelander raced out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first 23 minutes, and the score held until halftime.

After the break, Marshfield figured out its offensive attack and tied the game up. Kendra Tremelling scored on a shot from about 18 yards out in the 72nd minute, and Nina Hashimoto added another goal 3 minutes later to knot up the game at 2-2.

Neither team scored in the final 16 minutes of regulation before Rhinelander went ahead 3:20 into overtime on Anna Sturzl’s second goal of the game.

Marshfield had an opportunity to tie it again late in the overtime, only to be stymied by Rhinelander goalkeeper Abby Ottinger, who finished with 10 saves.

Andrea Carolfi had three saves and Wendy Rodriguez had five in goal for the Tigers.

“To come back from two and tie things up and force overtime shows the character of this team,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “They played with desire and passion, and never game up. I live their play and effort and they can all be very proud of how they played.”

Marshfield loses nine seniors to graduation – Maddie Haessly, Emily Criteli, Liz Holbrook, Maureen Cassidy, McKensey Koran, Inga Berg, Gracia Sondok, and both goalies, Rodriguez and Carolfi.

“Their play, hard work, and drive set the tone for the younger players,” Lindner said of the seniors.
