GRAND CHUTE – The 70th annual WIAA State Spring Baseball Tournament was held Tuesday, June 13, through Thursday, June 15, at Fox Cities Stadium near Appleton.
Kimberly won the Division 1 title with a narrow 4-2 win over Sun Prairie in the championship game June 15. The Papermakers (23-8) scored three times in the top of the sixth inning to pull ahead and held on for the win, the third state title in school history to go with a Class B title in 1989 and a Division 1 crown in 2007. This was the fourth-straight year Kimberly had made it to state.
In other championship games June 15, West Salem won the Division 2 title with an 8-6 victory over Waupun; La Crosse Aquinas routed Laconia 10-0 in Division 3; and Athens won the Division 4 championship with a 2-0 over Independence/Gilmanton.
The state title was West Salem’s first ever, while Aquinas and Athens won its second championship. Qauinas won a Division 3 title in 2007, while Athens was making its first state tournament appearance since taking the Class C crown in 1982.
